About Us

Home 47 designs and manufactures its own furniture in Sri Lanka: original, design-led collections made for modern Colombo homes and apartments.

We are not a showroom that imports and resells. Every piece in our catalogue was designed by us and built in our own workshop, then delivered directly to the person who bought it. That's the whole model, and it's why our furniture looks the way it does.

We design our own collections

Most furniture sold in Sri Lanka is either imported from a catalogue someone else drew, or built to a template that hasn't changed in twenty years. We do neither.

Home 47 develops its own design identities, coherent visual languages that run across an entire collection, from a console to a mirror to a drawer set. A piece from one of our collections should be recognisable as belonging to it, and should sit correctly beside the others.

We currently build across four:

Ceylon Modern

Sri Lankan tropical modernism. Cane and light timber tones, fern green and deep teal, sand and warm white. Airy and rooted at once. Designed for homes that want to feel like they belong to this island rather than to a catalogue from somewhere else.

Modernist Nostalgia

Mid-century clarity with a retro modular edge. Warm walnut against off-white lacquer, chrome tubular bases, soft black steel, and accents in cobalt, saffron and retro red. Built around daily rituals, records, coffee, the things you actually reach for.

Modern Glam

Sharper and more considered. Dark tones, brass and black metal detailing, and finishes with depth. For rooms meant to feel composed rather than casual.

Scandinavian Minimalism

Pale, quiet, and functional. Nothing decorative that isn't structural. The most restrained thing we make.

Each collection draws on real references, Bauhaus, mid-century modern, urban minimalism, and Sri Lankan tropical modernism, but none of them is a copy. They are ours.

What we don't make

A design point of view is defined as much by what it excludes. We don't build:

• Ornate or carved furniture. No turned legs, no applied detail, no heritage pastiche.
• Bulky furniture. Visual weight is a design failure in an apartment. Our pieces sit on legs and let the floor show.
• Solid natural timber. This one is deliberate, and it's worth explaining properly.

Why we don't build in solid wood

Two reasons. The first is about where the wood comes from.

In Sweden or Denmark, a furniture maker can buy solid timber from a supply chain that is organised, certified and traceable, where you can find out which forest a board came from and whether anything was planted to replace it. Sri Lanka does not have that. Most natural timber here moves through unorganised channels with no certification, no traceability, and no meaningful replanting obligation behind it. Buy solid wood locally and in most cases you cannot honestly say where it came from, or what was lost to get it.

We aren't willing to build a catalogue on that. So we don't.

The second reason is climate, and it happens to point the same way. Solid timber moves. In Sri Lankan humidity it swells, shrinks, cups and splits — a wardrobe door that stops closing in April is a design failure regardless of how good the wood was. It's heavy, which matters when a piece has to come up an apartment stairwell or into a lift. And it varies board to board, which makes consistency across a 167-piece catalogue impossible.

So we build with engineered board, 15mm Malaysian melamine and MDF, from certified, traceable sources. It's dimensionally stable in this climate, light enough to deliver and install without damage, and it holds a finish identically across an entire collection.

In Sri Lanka, solid wood isn't the premium choice. It's the unaccountable one.

And we provide a comprehensive three-year warranty on our products. 

Who we design for

We design for Colombo and suburban homes and apartments, and specifically for their constraints.

That means pieces sized for real rooms rather than showroom floors. Storage that works in a flat where wall space is finite. Finishes that survive monsoon humidity. Dimensions that clear a standard doorway and a standard lift. Furniture that looks like it was chosen rather than settled for.

Our customers are mostly people furnishing a first apartment, a new home, or a room they've decided to finally do properly. They care what it looks like. They have a budget. They shouldn't have to choose between the two.

Design you'd expect from an imported brand, made here

Imported design-led furniture in Sri Lanka carries a landed cost most households can't justify. Locally made furniture is usually built to a price with no design position at all.

We sit in the gap. Because we design and manufacture our own pieces and sell them directly, there's no importer margin and no distributor markup between the workshop and your living room. What that buys you isn't the cheapest furniture available, it's design at a price that's actually reachable.

How we work

What you see is what arrives. Our customers tell us consistently that pieces match the photographs in scale and colour. We photograph what we actually make.

We confirm before we build. For made-to-order and customised pieces, we call to confirm exact specifications before anything is cut, and again to confirm your delivery slot.

We adjust. Because we manufacture, we can change dimensions, alter a configuration, or produce a piece in a different finish. Tell us what you need and we'll tell you what's possible, what it costs, and how long it takes.

Where we deliver

We deliver across the Colombo and Gampaha districts as standard, with our own team rather than a courier. That's a deliberate limit,  it means we control how your furniture is handled, carried in, and installed.

Delivering elsewhere in Sri Lanka is possible by arrangement. Ask us.
